Two years ago, when Bethany was born with a serious heart problem, private insurance wouldn't help her.
Without SCHIP, Bethany might not be with us today.
In 2005, Dara and Bo Wilkerson learned that their three-week-old daughter had been born with several holes in her heart.
Bethany had heart surgery when she was six months old.
The Wilkerson family lives in St. Petersburg, Fla., on a total annual income of about $34,000 – thay're not poor, but like millions of other working families, they can't afford private insurance.
Even if they could, Bethany's "pre-existing condition" – the heart problem she was born with – made enrollment in a private plan impossible. Thanks to Florida's KidCare program, Bethany gets the care she needs to recover from her lifesaving surgery.
Bethany Wilkerson is not alone. Millions of children in America have parents who work hard for a living, but still can't afford to pay private insurance premiums. The State Children's Health Insurance Program offers a chance for these kids to get the care they need.
