2007 Anti-war Resolution
Cameron moved; Booth seconded; Adopted by USAction Executive Committee 3/12/07 with one no vote.

Whereas, on February 20, 2003 the USAction Executive Committee adopted: "USAction resolution on war with Iraq," stating our opposition to President Bush’s plan to take unilateral action against Iraq because the purpose for such action had not been justified, whose mission and duration are not clear, and whose impact may worsen the very terrorism it is designed to limit, while emphasizing our support for U.S troops;

Whereas, the situation in Iraq has only worsened and President Bush has proposed another U.S. troop surge, escalating the war with no plan for redeployment of U.S. troops. In addition President Bush has been sending U.S. troops into battle unprepared, often without proper body armor and without proper rest and home time – actions that are weakening our U.S. troops and further jeopardizing U.S. national security;

Whereas, the America people sent a strong message in the November 2006 election that a majority of us are opposed to the war, and believe it is time to begin to bring our troops home;

Whereas, on January 11, 2007 USAction President William McNary joined an effort to stop the escalation called "Americans Against Escalation in Iraq" (AAEI) and said, "move towards a solution that redeploys our valiant men and women, brave sons and daughters, husbands and wives and brings them home to us."

Be it therefore resolved that,

USAction is for ending the war and bringing the troops home at soonest possible date;

USAction is against the Bush strategy of permanent escalation – including sending more troops, involving American troops more deeply in the Iraqi civil strife, threatening military action against Iran, and others;

USAction is for setting a date for withdrawal.  We are open to working with allies and legislators about what that date should be, or even having the date be a range;

USAction is for insisting on standards of readiness, full funding for veterans benefits upon return, and not using the Guard & Reserves where active duty military belong;

USAction is for a foreign policy based on diplomacy first, and military force when needed in the service of a political strategy based on a democratic foreign policy, not instead of one;

USAction is for a democratic foreign policy that respects the national interests and human aspirations of all people and nations in the world, and that is based on the notion that the US should be a "beacon unto the nations," not the neighborhood bully of the world;

USAction is for funding to safely bring home our troops and aid to rebuild Iraq, to be carried out by Iraqis or international agencies that work well with Iraqis, not just to make American military-industrial corporations rich;

USAction will help lead Americans Against Escalation in Iraq (AAEI);

USAction is for winning votes in Congress, for taking actions that hold all members of Congress accountable for their votes and their words;

USAction is for genuinely bringing the broad range of domestic activist groups into this effort;

USAction is for building the connection between the grassroots & the netroots through this effort;

USAction is for working respectfully and effectively with, but not necessarily agreeing with all the tactics or positions of, the pre-existing peace movement.
