Social Security

Social Security—the promise we make to care for each other and safeguard our society—is one of America's most successful and important social programs.  It has helped to keep millions out of poverty and ensure a stable future for all Americans.  People from all walks of life depend on it, including children, seniors, the disabled, and women.

Social Security must remain a public insurance program that serves the interests of all Americans, rather than a business venture that serves the interests of the corporate elite.

The President’s plan puts Social Security in great peril, essentially gambling away the support Americans depend on for a safe retirement.  Americans shouldn’t have to settle for this "Las Vegas Retirement Plan," and neither should the children or people with disabilities who depend on Social Security for support.

There is no crisis: Social Security is safe, and the projected gap is manageable without a radical overhaul of the system. To put it in perspective, the revenue lost to President Bush's tax breaks for the wealthiest one percent of Americans would more than cover the long-term shortfall.

Privatization is the crisis.  Turning this nation's security over to corporations is the crisis.  Gambling with our future is the crisis.  Social Security is our security.  Don’t break the promise to our parents, our children, all of us.

Read the stories from other Americans who are worried that Bush's Social Security privatization plan will leave them in the cold.
